Pliska

Pliska
   First capital of Bulgaria (q.v.). According to tradition, it was founded by Asparuch (q.v.). Nikephoros I (q.v.) sacked it in 811. Despite Omurtag's (q.v.) reconstruction, it declined after Symeon of Bulgaria founded Preslav (qq.v.) in 893. Basil II's (q.v.) forces captured it ca. 1000, along with Preslav, as part of the Byzantine conquest of northern Bulgaria.
